It speaks of abandonment, trauma, survival and spiritual growth. From day one, each page was more riveting than the previous, and I devoured every word! A prolific writer, Vishanthie does not disappoint because she writes with such clarity, authenticity, and love. Vishanthie’s memoir is unparalleled in scope. Besides the many life lessons embedded throughout her story, and without giving away too much, her story covers many areas, from deep and often moving recollections around diversity and self-emancipation to infertility, adoption, and in particular motherhood and how this has shaped her own growth and identity. Her story is personal and yet relatable; it is unassuming and yet monumental, it is frank and yet compassionate. Vishanthie does not preach to the reader, nor is this memoir a self-help guide, instead she provides a path to positive transformation and growth at a time when this is most needed. It is moving, engaging, thought-provoking - a truly rich reading experience and an excellent embodiment of "the personal is political". There are so many and so diverse highlights, but personally I was really touched by the reflections on marriage and divorce, and the challenges of making remarkable achievements and how that relates to notions of womanhood, that is the unique challenges of a highly successful woman. It really spoke to me, encouraged and challenged me. I would also want to mention specifically the impact on students and in general the impact of her teaching and her engagement with social issues. Again, it inspires - both by encouraging and by challenging. The memoir is honest, raw and vulnerable, and therefore very powerful. I laughed and cried, I paused to think deeply, I was challenged to reflect on my own life, and challenged to act - to really value every opportunity life gives us to make an impact. I liked best the way a personal story is intertwined with the vicissitudes of the South African nation. What touched me most is that the difficulties the author had to go through did not render her a sour person. On the contrary in this fascinating trajectory she navigated through traumas and mother's love, she managed to look inside herself and outside to social cruelty, and develop into a full fledged academic but most of all celebrate life and those within it.
